Boycott will hurt us more

I AGREE with Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Hishammuddin Tun Hussein's statement that boycotting American brands will affect our economy, “Boycott of American brands not the answer” (The Star, April 8).

In terms of trade, Americans have become excellent business partners. American products and services have penetrated all over the world. Levi's, BUM, Ford, Avon and IBM are just some of the common brands preferred by many in our society, even in the remote parts of the country. Fast-food restaurants like McDonalds, KFC and Pizza Hut have captured the hearts of many Malaysians.

It is true that boycotting these products and services would create great losses to some of our prominent entrepreneurs and also leave many youths unemployed. We all should work together to uphold the peace and stability that is so unique to Malaysia. In doing so, we must also promote our own identity, culture and tradition.

Would it be the right time now to call KFC, Kampung Fried Chicken?
